Our Primary Purpose
“To stay sober and help other alcoholics achieve sobriety”
The Framework
HONEStY
The admission of powerlessness and the end of denial. It is the foundational principle—admitting that a problem exists and that life has become unmanageable
HOPE
The belief that there is a power greater than oneself that can restore sanity. It is the shift from the “noise” of despair to the “signal” of a possible solution
FAITH
The decision to let go of self-will and trust in a spiritual path. It involves the willingness to rely on a higher power rather than one’s own ego
COURAGE
The bravery required to look inward and perform a searching and fearless moral inventory. It is about facing the truth of one’s past without blinking
INTEGRITY
The act of admitting the exact nature of our wrongs to God, ourselves, and another human being. It bridges the gap between our private secrets and our public selves
WILLINGNESS
The readiness to have shortcomings removed. It isn’t about being perfect; it’s about being entirely ready to let go of old behaviors that no longer serve you
HUMILITY
The recognition of one’s true place in the world—neither above nor below others. It is the quiet request for help in overcoming shortcomings
LOVE
Developing a list of all persons harmed and becoming willing to make amends. This principle focuses on repairing broken relationships and practicing empathy
Discipline
The actual “Action” of making direct amends. It requires the consistency and courage to face those we have hurt and take responsibility for our part
Perseverance
The commitment to continued self-examination. Daily maintenance—promptly admitting when we are wrong to prevent the “noise” from building up again
Spirituality
Seeking through prayer and meditation to improve conscious contact with a higher power. It is about finding the quiet signal amidst the static of daily life
Service
The act of carrying the message to others and practicing these principles in all affairs. It is the ultimate “Into Action” step— giving back what was freely given
The only requirement
“Is the desire to STOP drinking”
